Intertek EMF Testing Supports Declaration of Conformity01/07/2005| | | | |
The Intertek laboratory in Leatherhead, UK is one of the ASTA BEAB accredited EMC laboratories around the world helping electronics manufacturers test the EMF emissions of their products - in accordance with EN50366:2003 (Household and similar electrical appliances - EMF - Methods for Evaluation and Measurement).
The standard has been introduced under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) to protect human beings from the hazardous effects, which may be caused by exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted by electrical apparatus, by providing compulsory limits to safer levels.
Intertek's extensively equipped EMC testing facilities are being used by manufacturers who are concerned that their Declaration of Conformity might be compromised by EMF issues.
Essentially if a product's EMF emissions exceed the threshold of acceptable levels they will no longer comply with the Low Voltage Directive and manufacturers will in theory not be able to legally apply CE Marking to them - particularly challenging when you consider that European law requires the CE Marking of products.
The potential impact of this issue on European electrical product sales means that manufactures must not be in any doubt as to the EMF emission levels of their products. If they aren't sure, they should get them tested.
As awareness of this issue widens, the demands on laboratory resources will significantly increase and manufacturers may not be able to secure immediate testing, so they should make provision for it as soon as possible to prevent any potential non-compliance.
Reputable EMC laboratories such as Intertek can provide appropriate testing services to help manufactures in this area and to ultimately assist the continued integrity of their Declaration of Conformity.
